I know I have mentioned this before but I'll write it again. We have been using The Phonics Road to Spelling and Reading for 18 weeks now. I can't say enough good things about it.

I also have the two oldest using Spell to Write and Read. I have been using it for a month, so I can't really say much about it. I really believe in the way it teaches but so far it hasn't been easy. I thought for sure, since I am using The Phonics Road that I would be able to use SWR with no problem.
Josh, is bored with it and Annette tolerates it but you know, they are learning.

Joshua, is having quiet a few "light" bulb moments. He has a hard time with the vowel sounds. Particularly with any of the o's like, o, oa, oe (he gets them mixed up, sometimes saying /a/ for one of them). He gets other vowel teams mixed up, but has been improving. He understands the sh, si, ci, ti now. When he is writing he will remember not to use /sh/ in a syllable after the first one, except in the ending ship. After months he now remembers to use /ck/ after a short vowel. That was a praise the Lord moment. Josh has even told me thank you for teaching him with this spelling program. He doesn't like it but he knows he needs to plod through. I have mentioned-steady plodding.

Annette, is a better speller but she too is learning. She catches on a bit faster regarding the phonograms and uses what she learns in other subjects. She, like Josh, has mentioned she doesn't care for it. I'm thankful that they don't complain.

As for Caleb & Brent using The Phonics Road I have to say that at times they don't care for it either.

Not that they complain but I do let them know that life is not always going to be a bed of Roses. We must do things that we don't like and do it for the glory of God.

Now with chores sometimes I can see it in their body language that they do not want to do something. Before they do the chore I stop them and say, "Hey, while your picking up your room, thank God that you have things to pick-up. Pray for a joyful, thankful heart. Ask God to help you be a servant. When you pick up something that belongs to your sibling, pray for them." Again, I mention that we do everything for God's glory, to please Him. I don't expect them to pray all this in one prayer, I'm just giving them some tips.

I'm saying this with a loving heart and let them know that dad and I pray for these things ourselves. We constantly want to better ourselves for God. To become like Jesus. I want Jesus to shine through me, not Linda.

I got away from spelling but thought that was important. I don't want you all thinking my children obey with joyful hearts all the time.

  1. You are such a great Mama!! Just wanted to tell you that...you are such an inspiration to me. I love that you share your struggles and you share what works....
I am so glad you are my friend even if we are only internet friends...LOL. I still wish you were my neighbor though ~smile~

  2. Thanks, Amity, for your kind words. I would love for us to be neighbors too. Our two bedroom apartment upstairs will be available at the end of the month ;) hint, hint.
