If I Could Start Over With Language Arts

If I could start over with Language Arts, what would I do? If I could go back in time; Josh is five years old.

I would purchase The Phonics Road to Spelling and Reading. I would take the first year having him learning the sounds, continue through first grade but add penmanship. Have him learn those sounds forward and backwards while learning how to write them.

In 2nd grade we would officially start using The Phonics Road. Because I would like to keep them (the children) in two some would finish between 5 or 6th grade.
Once done with The Phonics Road continue with The Latin Road and Daily Grams.

That's what I would do.

My children are now 5.5yrs to 11.5yrs. I have wasted so much time and money. I was flip-flopping around, like a fish out of water.

I have learned that the grass is not always greener on the other side, just more complictaed and expensive.

  1. As the saying goes "Hindsight is always 20/20".
You are wiser now and doing a fabulous job. I know some days it must feel like 1 hour of phonics is an eternity, but it all adds up to a great learning experience. I appreciate your passion for phonics, it spurs me on. Some days I'd rather just do art and science :).

I will never do Winter Promise, the books and notebooking pages are very inviting to me. But I will stick with Tapestry of Grace for the rhetoric level discussion questions for Jennifer. Next year she is going to be doing more IEW writing that will be linked directly with her history studies.

Mystery of History has always been a favorite of a lot of people. Sounds like a great plan. Why not just include Joshua in that?

    take care and happy Sunday.
    hugs,
    Linda

  2. I would include Joshua, but he is so tired of The Beginning. He has studied it a lot. I think I over did it with him about starting with the Ancients.

TOG, I have heard many good things about their writing and literature questions. I put everything in my cart at TOG that I would need (wanted) and it got a bit pricey. I do like that you can purchase one semester or term at a time.
