McRuffy Tuesday

We are starting our second week with McRuffy Math. Today I taught McRuffy Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade. I let the children know in advance that I'd be calling there name for math time. One by one we got it done.

Caleb went first.

Here he is sorting bears to show his multiplication problems. His first lesson was pretty easy so I had him do two today for a total of 30 minutes.

Brent was next.

Today he worked with pattern blocks.

He had to find different ways to fill in the shape with the pattern blocks. He started with 7 shapes the last one he had to fill it with 12 shapes. He had fun and it was neat watching him trying to figure it out.

He also worked in his math journal.

After Brent was Ethan. Ethan and I had lots of fun.

Today I was suppose to have 100 counters in a bag. Ethan had to take a handful and count them. Then  write how many in his workbook. He didn't realize he had to count them at first so he pulled a big handful which held 40 counters. After that he didn't pull as many out.

The last time we counted the whole bag. I guess I can't count because there were a 104 in the bag instead of 100. We both got different numbers so finally we put all the counters on the hundreds mat.

Now we know there are 100 counters in the bag.

Last was my Lance. He was acting silly like always.
First we practiced writing numbers 1-5 in the sandbox.

Then we placed a number card on the table and put that many bears below it.

We practiced numbers 1-5

By the time we finished he was tired. Tomorrow we'll do the samething. Maybe we'll even use the workbook. Lance, is my only child who hasn't been interested in school. Caleb, Brent & Ethan learned a lot through osmosis I didn't have to teach them how to count to 100 or their addition and subtraction facts. They just learned them, but not Lance. We are starting at the beginning. It'll be fun to see how much he learns this year.

I had a lot of fun teaching math today.

  2. It was fun. It took a few hours to fit them all in though. Yikes!
Have fun tomorrow looking at all your goodies.

  3. This looks really nice :) I'm teaching my K'er Horizons Math and it's not all that fun. Was Lance doing the Kindergarten?? Is the sandbox included? Hmmm....re-thinking this a bit even though I don't want to change but I do want math to be fun.

My computer battery died, so I'm using another computer and hoping that my cord will arrive soon.

    Hugs, Tamara

  4. I am going to join in this McRuffy adventure! I've been reading and looking through all the online samples since I left my last comment and this is pretty much exactly where my heart would love to teach. I am printing off the samples until my books arrive and I nearly have all the manipulatives. Thank you for sharing!!! I was blessed to read a comment on CBD from another parent who shared that their child was more than ready to advance into Horizons Math 1 at the end of the year...that is just what I needed to hear.

I look forward to your sharing more on this program.

  5. Hi Tamara, Although I have only been using it for little more than a week, I have enjoyed every math session with my guys. The saltbox is not included but any tray will work. I purchased mine when I was ordering my SWR things.

Yes, Lance is using the Kindergarten. Don't print too samples off. You'll most likely receive you items at the beginning of next week ;)

  6. Good Morning!
I ordered the K color set from CBD. I hope that I ordered the right one because I don't want the black & white. Seems the samples are not near as engaging.

What is SWR? I know I've seen the abbreviation in the homeschool realm but can't remember it :)

Thanks for the heads up on the centimeter cubes, too.

  7. Hmmm, last time I checked with CBD they were out until June then it was pushed back to July but now it says they have three in stock. Very interesting.
I ordered mine from CBD at first but they sent me the B&W one, so I called and they sent a return shipping label.
Hopefully you'll get the correct one. If not CBD will let you return it with no stocking fee.

  9. Thanks for the heads up. I hope I get the right one. They already shipped it out this morning.
CBD Stock No: WW691358 (and yes, it shows 3 in stock right now, so I'm hoping that I get the right one.)
