Creative Math

Some days I can't think what to write and other days I have plenty. Today, is a plenty day. I took lots of pictures.

As you all know, I'm pulling what I need from the Waldorf method for math. To be honest, I'm not sure what I'm doing. Monday and Tuesday we worked with Roman Numerals. I know when most people think 'Waldorf' they see beautiful pictures. Here at Homeschooling6 I don't think we have an artsy bone in our body.

 Annette's book.
 I thought her hands were so cute and had to have a close-up.
 Caleb's work.
 Joshua's work.
Today, we worked with odds and even numbers. I did this the night before. I then taped it on the table and had the four older children copy it, while I had tutoring sessions with some.
Here is Josh, copying his, while I work with Caleb on some dictation.

Once everyone was done copying their odd and even numbers, we came together and talked about them. Noticing the different ways to add. For instance when adding an odd and even number, it always comes out odd!
 We then made another page of odd numbers as seen below.
Waldorf has something called movement. For example, with math, when teaching skip-counting, you can have the children jump rope and say, "1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, ......" You would emphasize the odd numbers by having them say them louder.
I don't have time to take the children outside, so I had to get creative. I had the children march in place and count. When they came to an odd number they lifted their hands. I figure it's movement and the children loved it!!!

Just because I couldn't help myself, I had to draw a gnome. I drew this last night, while going over my lesson. I didn't use it in the lesson but thought it came out so cute!

I refer to the knomes as 'the Gnome Family'. I keep things out like 'mother' earth and such.

Remember, I'm not a Waldorf puriest as you can plainly see. I'm taking what I need  and having fun with it. Because, I'm sure we are not doing this right I would love to change the name to 'Creative Math'.

Maybe after a math post I can write {creative math, mixture of Waldorf and other fun stuff!}

  2. That's awesome! I don't know how you keep up with all of it. I think it's great that you are making if fun for your kiddos. I think that's half the battle. When we have tears with homework here at home, I think, what can this child possibly be learning from this??! "creative math," is a great name!

  3. I'm very impressed. I have lots of Waldorf resources and I still find it hard to jump in and do "Waldorf style math". It looks like you are doing an awesome job.
