Day 40

I thought since we had so much candy we'd have fun with it. Below I put skittles and M&Ms in water and we watched the letters float to the top.
 Floating m's.
 You have to really look to see the floating s.
 The M&Ms did better than the Skittles.
The children 'caught' some of the m's. I think those fingers belong to Annette, Caleb and Brent.

 I wrote the alphabet for him. Then I dictated letters and words.
If he forgets how to make a certain letter, all I have to do is remind him of the Letter Story that he learned from PAL/Writing. For instance with the letter 'u' I'll say, "It's princess /u/ up" and it will jog his memory. Another is the letter 'w'. I'll show him the sign for water and he'll remember how to make the letter. He knows the sounds but forgets what the letter looks like.

I spent a lot of time with Annette, going over fractions and the rule of 4 and 8 via Math-U-See and the short-cut. We'll practice more tomorrow.

I didn't get too many sessions in but am happy that I did a Hideaway in History lesson. I am trying to figure out how to fit it in. One of my thoughts is to push some other subjects a side one week out of a month to focus on history and science.
Maybe take a week off from grammar and writing to do this. Still not sure but that's something I'm thinking about.

Today, in Shurley English Caleb and Brent were introduced to subject pronouns.
Josh, watched a few Kahn Academy math tutorials (fractions).
Lance, practiced counting tens.
Ethan, finished week 2, day 1 of Fast Track phonics.
Another day down =)

Trick-or-treating at Lupe's Work

The children really do look forward to trick-or-treating at Lupe's work. By the time they are done they have tons of candy. They do have to discard any candy that is chewy or hard (Milk Duds, tootsie rolls, etc.).

This was Friday.

Sunday we had a Fall Fest at the church. The children don't dress up but there is a Chili Cook Off. Yum!
I'll have to load pics later. I forgot my camera but my SIL took some pictures.

Tonight we are going to walk to Old Downtown and have fun.

I'm really not to crazy with the kids dressing up. As a child I was not allowed to dress up (although I always wanted to dress-up as Laura Ingalls or a Victorian gal with the hoop dresses). I wasn't going to allow my children, but hubby didn't see it the same way, so I've learned to just accept it and have fun with the children.

Week 8/Day 39

Week 8. Sept. 24th-28th. 2011.

This week were a few interruptions this week. Wednesday some of the children went to Oklahoma with Lupe to pick up our new vehicle, then Friday, we were going to my Sweets work for trick-or-treating. The children look forward to this every year. We don't go trick-or-treating through the neighborhood so this is a real treat for them. Anyway, because excitement was in the air it was hard to stay on track.

Ethan lost a tooth. 
I'm still up in the air about history for the youngers. We are using Hideaways in History but I want maps. Something like SOTW's activity pages. The notebooking pages are okay but I prefer something with less drawing and more coloring and labeling of maps. By labeling I mean using a blue crayon or color pencil to trace the Nile River or put a triangle where Egypt is and such. So I'm looking into purchasing some maps or a fun geography course. I've been poking around at Knowledge Quest.
Ethan, started MCP Math last week. He is suppose to be using Teaching Textbooks 3 but I lost it. Ack! Embarrassing!
Annette, continues to use America the Beautiful from Notgrass. Here she is completing a history assignment.

Answring Auntie Em

My Aunt Em asked these questions:
"Hi Snoop! Did Lupe get back with a new car? Is it a Van or Car? Is that why he went to Oklahoma? Did you have to do the Sparks Class by yourself, or was Lupe there in time? If you taught the class, how did it go?"
Yes, Auntie he did. He purchased a GM YukonXL. Yes, that's why he went to Oklahoma. No, thankfully he made it to church. The children and I walked to church and Lupe arrived just as I was taking the Sparks to class. Lupe, taught.

P.S. My childhood nickname was Snoopy. My dad said I was a snoopy toddler.

Day 38

I'm so glad summer is gone and fall is here. The weather is lovely. I can open my windows again. The temperature didn't even hit 70's.
Last night I took some strawberries out of the freezer for snack time today.
 Lance, completed an All About Spelling lesson. I dictated the sounds of the letters and he wrote them. I also dictated a few words. To help him remember how to place and form a letter on the lines, I wrote the alphabet on the top of his page.
 Later he had a tantrum.
 Completing a math lesson from his Math book. We were going over what numbers consist of. For instance the number 11 is one-ten and one unit.
 Then we practiced place value.
And I thought they were doing school.

Half Day (Day 37)

Today was one of those half school days. Because today didn't start like a normal day it hasn't been a normal day. I don't know why but when my day is thrown off by something it's almost always stays that way. Like today. I woke before six to get Lupe and the two oldest off to Oklahoma and instead of starting school at 8:00 we didn't. I did some Internet surfing and the children played some games or just played. Weird huh?

Maybe we're just excited because Lupe, is bringing home a new vehicle  

Whatever the reason we did some school though. Ethan completed another lesson from his Fast Track Phonics program.
 We did some history notebooking pages and added some map work. We read about China. Lance, drew (middle pic) a picture of The Great Wall of China.
 Had a light lunch of yogurt and berries.
 Children did some physical education.
 This past weekend I didn't bake. Instead I bought lots of frozen and canned fruit, yogurt and applesauce. This weekend I'll baks something yummy and add more frozen/canned fruit.
We like our fruit cold, so I put the canned fruit in the fridge.

This week we finished our 3rd week of Hideaways in History. I'm liking the program especially the picture books. The only thing that would make it perfect for me would be maps. I would like for the children to color and label maps. They don't have to be anything  with major detail, just something so the children can see the area we are studying.
I'm considering Map Trek to add to our history studies.
 I could purchase the cds only but I like having a book in my hand. I like the cd because I can print as any maps as I need.
I'm still looking around but think Map Trek may be it. I spent way too much time today looking for a map to go with our studies. I'd rather pay and have it done for me.

I can't wait for All About Reading level 1 to ship. I know Lance, is going to like it better than PAL/Reading. All About Reading makes more sense to this mama. I think starting with the short vowel and going from there will work better.
PAL/Reading introduces a sound via a word but with no real practice. For example the word 'brown' introduces the 'ow' phonogram. I know AAS is done along side it and will cement the phonograms but I like more order and lots of practice.

That's it for today, I need to get supper started. We have AWANA tonight. Hope Lupe makes it home in time otherwise I'm in charge of our Sparks class. I prefer my Sweets to do the lesson, I get too embarrassed.
