Saturday is my baking day. I bake muffins and cookies. I'll soon add granola bars. I started this a few weeks ago. I was finding during the week we didn't have a quick snack to grab on the go. The older children and I don't have time to sit at the table and eat during lessons. They are allowed to take a snack to their room with a napkin.

Some snacks that the children are allowed:
  • Fruit or veggies
  • applesauce or yogurt (depends on what we have) with a graham cracker (if we have them)
  • Hearty homemade muffin made from whole wheat flour, shredded carrots, applesauce, nuts, dried apricots and cherries (other homemade muffins if available). This time I added some chocolate chips per Lupe's request.
  • Cookies-currently oatmeal peanut butter, made with whole wheat flour, oatmeal, peanut butter and I do use butter in this recipe. I like butter =) I also made chocolate chip cookies using half white and half whole wheat flour. Annette, requested them. Last week I said no, but this week it sounded good.
  • Slice of bread, this is usually if we don't have anything else.
If they are thirsty they can have water, milk or juice but they have to pick. If they didn't have water earlier then that is their first choice. They usually only have milk in the morning with their cereal or on the rare occasion when they are allowed a cup of chocolate (Ovaltine) milk. Juice is usually Orange Juice because it's our staple juice. About once a month or so I'll buy 100% grape or cranberry/cherry.

I try not to purchase fish crackers, cheese its etc. I do buy these but it's far and few between. I think the last time we had fish crackers or cheese its was at least 6 months ago. The children like them and I will purchase as a treat but for the most part they are happy with the homemade stuff.

The less packaged or bagged treats the better. Some bagged treats that I do purchase but again rarely is pretzles and animal crackers.

That's snack time at Homeschooling6!

  1. Baking day is a great idea! I need to do that at my house...maybe I could do more laundry during the week and keep Sunday for baking day (since we go to church on Saturday).

BTW...I have a new computer and now I can comment on your blog! Yay!
