Happy Thanksgiving

I'm in Georgia, with my two sisters Cynthia and MaryEllen. We are celebrating Thanksgiving today because my brother-in-law has to work tomorrow. As I type the aroma of turkey, stuffing, and homemade bread is wafting through the house. Can't wait till it's all done. Yummy!

My sisters and I are having a fun time. Yesterday we went to Downtown where they have all those nice antique stores. I purchased a few nice thing and stayed within my $30.00 budget. Later I'll have to post a picture of my finds. One was a pretty pitcher. I don't have a lot of room in my home but I thought I could find space on the counter and put my wooden spoons, rubber spatulas and such in it.

The children at this moment are playing a Nancy Drew game on the computer. They each get 20 minutes.
My sister's yard is huge so the children love it. Lots of running around in the open. It's so peaceful here. One can hear the leaves rustle in the wind. I love hearing the trees.

My sister has a humungo mailbox it's the biggest one on the lot.

Well that's it for now. I need to start peeling some potatoes.

Week 11/Day 54

Week 11. November 14-18, 2011.

"Luck befalls me today, mama. I don't have that many history pages to read." This is what Annette, said to me this morning. She so precious.

Joshua, is doing well with Sequential Spelling. He is noticing the patterns in the words, he said. With Joshua using dvds this year, I don't feel left out of his schooling. I ask questions, we talk about what he is learning in science and history. I watch his math dvds to help him in that area and I sit with him via Analytical Grammar. I correct his work and help him make his schedule out for the next week. Although he is using dvds for every subject I'm still apart of his education.

Josh also cleared and cleaned his desk. He put all his books in alphabetical order too!

I have to cut this week in review short. I probably won't be blogging next week either.

Day 53

Annette, and I had a good  chat today. I really enjoy our time together. I had the five younger children clean the yard. There were tons of leaves and sticks to be racked and picked-up. Since we live on a lot with three other famlies I had the children pick-up all the toys, put them in a bin and placed them in front of the appropiate house.

As we were raking my dad came home (he is one of the famlies that lives on the lot!) and played a game of football with the boys. I decided to pull leaves and called Annette over to keep me company. I like pulling weeds for some reason. Maybe it's the challenge of trying to pull out the whole weed, roots and all.

As I was gathering some leaves Annette, noticed a bug. Some sort of small beetle. She took the opurtunity to observe the little guy. She asked Ethan, if he would put it on the table for her. She made a little cage out of sticks to try to keep him from running off.

I need to take a picture and insert it in this post because she drew the little creature. She showed me the drawing and told me how the little part (they maybe hairs or stronger than hair) on it's leg helps them when it climbs.

She commented that her science book (Nature Study with Aunt Bessie) has taught her to observe God's creation. She said she notices how God's creations are all connected. I think what she meant by that is some of the leaves in our yard were already decomposing in the dampness, how the bugs help in certain ways and so forth.

She even picked up a handful of dirt and noticed how it looked like what we have in our compost pile. She said dirt has more than dirt in it. She saw small sticks, grass, minerals (guess that's what it was), little rocks, it was neat watching her observe things about the dirt and appreciating what God made for us.

For math today, I went over adding money. I always have fun using money to show the ones (pennies), tens (dimes), hundreds (dollars) and thousands (ten dollars).I think because it was such an eye opener to me. When I was in school numbers were just numbers. I didn't realize they each had a place and value. If I was adding $11.32+9.99 I didn't know that I was adding 2 pennies and 9 pennies. I thought I was adding 2+9, which I was but I didn't understand that I was counting pennies. When I had to carry the 1 because I had 11 pennies, I didn't realize that I was putting a ten above the 3. I thought I was just putting a one up there and then would add 9+3+1. I didn't see the value of those numbers (9 tens + 3 tens + 1 ten). This is exciting stuff!!! So I have so much fun teaching and showing the children.

Below I was showing Ethan how to add $27.79 + 8.62. I'll do this a few more times just to make sure he 'sees' the place value. He can add this quickly but again I want him to know that each number has a place and value.

I also watched a Math-U-See lesson with Brent. We watched Gamma lesson 29 on factors, I did a few problems and let him loose. Then I watched an Epsilon lesson with Caleb. He is on lesson three. He is learning how to compare equivilent fractions.

I enjoy sitting, watching and teaching the children. I know I seem to always want independence with my children. It's not that I don't want to teach them or sit with them but there are only so many hours in the day. And days like these when I sit with the children (which I enjoy) I have to let other things go.

I think to some, I may come across as not wanting all that cuddle time or being engaged with my children while schooling and teaching. I was actually shocked when someone commented (not on this blog) that I don't seem very family based.

Four years ago I had to give up the more literature approach of teaching. What I mean is using something like Sonlight or WinterPromise. With each year I was adding a new little student to Homeschooling6. I had a lot of little ones and teaching them the 3R's was taking more and more of my time. Gathering the children became more difficult and soon I was no longer doing history, science or even reading out loud to my children. My oldest son Josh, wanted to do these subjects but always had to wait for mama and most days mama didn't come to sit and read a history or science book.

I then decided to use a textbook for science and history and start purchasing audio books. I guess to some this may look very ungathering-family friendly but it's what I had to do.

Now that the children are older. Josh and Annette, no longer need so much of my time (with regards to school subjects), Caleb and Brent are slowly doing more on thier own so I decided to dabble back in with the Literature approach. This year I purchased WinterPromise Hideaways in History. I still am finding it hard to fit it in because my day is full teaching 3 math lessons, 1 Latin lesson, 2 phonics lessons, 4 writing lessons, 1 read aloud time and 3 spelling lessons, so history and science are still at the bottom of the list but I am trying.

Gees, not sure I how went from writing about our school day to 'I really do love to cuddle and have one-on-one time with my children'. I guess it came about when I was writing how I enjoy sitting with my children and watching their math lesson with them. 

I just heard Ethan, sing, 3-6-9- the goose drank wine, the monkey chewed tobacco on a car street line. The line broke the monkey chocked and they all went to heaven in sailboat.

He mixed up the underlined words. Street car line, not car street line. In a little row boat not a sailboat.

You all are probably wondering why on terra (Latin word for earth) is Ethan, singing that song. Well, you see, it was a song that my mother taught us kids (along with many other songs, lots are church songs I might add) and it's just one of those things where I feel a little bit of my mother being passed on. I know, why can't I pick one of the other songs (like Jesus Loves Me or Deep and Wide)? This one, as crazy as it may seem is special, just like "Go Tell Aunt Rhody"

And just to be clear, my mother was not a tobacco or wine drinker, she had lots of little rhyming songs and jingles that she taught us. Another I remember is Ride a Cock-horse to Banbury Cross.


Ethan, did some math today. Again, I took out our base ten blocks and went over adding up to the thousands. He has caught on rather quickly. We'll finish the rest of the week with adding, then move onto subtraction. I'll introduce subtraction with Math Mammoth than have him do his MCP Math. Not sure why I'm doing it this way but I am.

Ethan also did lots of laundry today. He washed about three loads yesterday and another four loads today. Brent and Caleb folded them.

I didn't take any pictures of our school day today other than Ethan doing the laundry. I spent a good 40 minutes with Annette. The diagramming in Analytical Grammar is becoming more difficult for her. We sat down and we worked them out together using the whiteboard. We enjoyed our time. It was fun and Annette, is actually pretty good with diagramming. She looks at the sentence, ask questions and if needed will refer to her diagramming  map/sheet that is included. She cracks me but, she was telling me that she sometimes diagrams her sentences when she talks. When she is reading she finds herself diagramming.

I also sat with Caleb for a bit to go over his math. He is doing well but needed to be walked through some fraction word problems.

The four older children and I started another chapter in Latin (Ch-7). Latin is coming along. There is a lot to memorize. Josh and Annette are doing fine. Caleb and Brent are barely keeping up. I too am barely staying afloat. I only have so much wall space to place the Latin words. This has really helped though. I am putting Latin words in my sentences now. For instance when making dinner I'll say,  "Sto parare cena/cenae" which means 'I stand to prepare dinner' or I'll tell Lupe on his way out, "Don't forget to say buy to your filia" which means daughter.

I also made a few batches of Chocolate Chip cookies. Two kinds. One has oatmeal and Grap Nuts cereal. The other is the original Chocolate Chip cookies. The children will take them to AWANA. It's cookie night.

For nap time today, I let the children watch The Incrediables and eat cookies.

Lance, had to wear his shoes around his neck again. I found them on the living room floor.

Day ?

It's been forever since I've put what day we are on. I'll have to find out and start-up again.

I started our day with Bible. Caleb, Brent, Ethan and Lance. I really am not caring for our Bible time studies but I'm not sure where to go, so I will continue for now. I am thinking of reading through the Rod and Staff Readers with my two younger ones and have them narrate it back to me. If I do this it means separating them from Caleb and Brent. I guess I could have Brent and Caleb focus mainly on their AWANA verses this year. We can discuss them later in the day.

Latin was done with the four oldest children. We started finished Unit 6 today and will start 7 tomorrow.

Lance, actually got a Bible story during math time. In our math we read about Noah and the Ark. As I read we went counted by 10's using our unifix cubes. We counted 1-ten, 2-ten, 3-ten for the forty days and nights. We also counted tens for how long they stayed in the ark and counted by twos. Lance, wanted to get his Bible and look at the pictures as I read from his math book.

 Not school related but thought I'd add this memory in. Lance, has a problem with not picking up his shoes. Now whenever I find his shoes on the floor he has to wear them. Today he wore them until lunch (a few hours). All the other children quickly checked the house to make sure they had no shoes on the floor.
Right now as I'm typing I can hear Lance, in his bedroom sounding out words. Hopefully after Thanksgiving we can start using All About Reading (if it's here by then). He is so ready now!!!
Lance, waited patiently for a squirrel to emerge. He loves taking pictures. I need to get a camera for the children to use.
Ethan, doesn't like me taking pictures of him anymore. Weird, since he was the one asking, "Will you put this on your blog?" or requesting me to add something of his.

I don't have time to write the rest of our school day but here are some pictures that Annette took of Lance.

Working with the Older Children

Our homeschooling day was so busy! I had lots of tutoring sessions with my older children today. Analytical Grammar with Josh. I realized how important it is for me to correct this with him (as it says in the teacher binder). I can get away with this with Annette but not my Josh :) By me sitting with him and helping him understand the object of the preposition and remind him what a modifier is, I noticed that a few light bulb moments and I'll probably have to remind him again tomorrow to keep those light bulbs from going out.

I went over WinterPromise grammar with Annette. She was not sure about compound verbs and subjects. She had to underline the subject once and the verb twice. I actually used what I learned from Shurley to help her find the sub. and verb. The question and answer flow works! She is almost done with the first Unit of Analytical Grammar and is doing very well. I think using both AG and WP-LA is working out great!

I also had a math session with Josh. I FINALLY took the time to watch his math dvds. I don't know why I didn't do this sooner. Now I know what the Systematic Math teacher was doing and can really help Josh. The way Josh was explaining things to me made no sense. Now I see that he has been twisting some of what Mr. Paul (his teacher) was saying.

We started back with our Latin studies. I made cards and taped them around the kitchen where I hang out most. Now I will remember to use my Latin when speaking.

I didn't get to Shurley Grammar or All About Spelling or Writing with Ease today.

Still Learning

I'm still learning. The past couple of months I have been asking God to help me. My two little ones are driving me crazy! I have actually been quite lazy with them to be honest. In fact I was telling my oldest son Josh that I have become a push-over. Some of the things my two little ones are getting away with are things that Josh, Annette, Caleb and Brent never (or almost) never did. And it's showing. My two little ones are not always a joy to be around. Yes, they have good, helpful hearts but they are not always obedient the first time and right away.

Well, today, I read A Day in the life of Samuel. A book about the pilgrims. It's seven years after the Mayflower arrived. The little boy Samuel, now a big 7yr. old little man. No longer wearing a dress but now breeches. He had a big boys job now. Although it was hard and tiring he didn't complain, whine or slack off. He wanted to make him parents proud.

As I read the books to the children I realized character traits that I have been to lazy to cultivate with my own dear children. I realized that I need to get back to work and take the time to discipline them. I was very disappointed in myself because although I noticed that I have been slacking it wasn't until I read this book that I REALLY realized the damage I am doing to my two little boys.

This is why I believe read aloud time is so important. In the past it was not only the Bible but many great books that helped me to see and recognise things. For instance the way a mother was mothering her child. I learned from that. The way the child was acting. The children would learn from that. Whether it was a negative or positive attitude. We would discuss the character traits of the characters in the books. Is this a pleasing or not pleasing attitude to our Lord Jesus? Is this child a joy to be around? Etc.

Here is an example, today, I went over math with Ethan. I then assigned him one row of math problems to complete. When I went to check on his math, he finished a row but it was not the one I told him to do. I praised him on his work but told him that was not the row I had originally said. I then told him to sit back down and complete the row. He immediately said, "I'll finish it during nap time" normally I would have said okay or I would have been fine with the row HE chose to do but instead I took the time to NOT let him get away with NOT doing what I told him to do.

He didn't like having to sit back down. He didn't like that he couldn't go outside to play and finish the row of problems later but that's okay. I am not here to make Ethan, happy. I told him that too. I let him know that by not doing the row I assigned him, he was sinning by not being obedient. As his mother I am the one who will have to answer to God.

Now this may sound heavy for me to be telling my 8yr. old son. I am not yelling or raising my voice. I am talking in a calm and loving manner. I want my son to know that I love him enough to correct him. Even if it means he has to do another row of math problems and not play outside when the weather is so nice.

Another example. Today, I gave Lance the job of folding our cloth napkins and placemats. I took the time to show him how I wanted the job done. Some of our napkins are almost as big as the placemats because of this I had him touch a napkin and a then a placemat. I told him the napkins are thinner than the placemats.

His attitude about the chore was not very pleasing. He tried to rush through the job. I sat him back down with the napkins (that were done sloppy) and again showed him the difference. I pointed out about the folding. I had him redo the napkins. If this was yesterday, I would have been too busy and would have said, that's fine. Thanks. But today I slowed down, took the time to show him what I expected, correct his attitude and had him do the sloppy job again.

Like Ethan, he wasn't happy. It took him an hour to fold those napkins. Normally it should have taken him 15 minutes. I want to teach him to do things with a joyful heart and the right way the first time.

Tomorrow I'll read A Day in the Life of Sarah Morton. Hmmm......what new things will we all learn tomorrow...........

Week 10

Week 10. Nov. 7th-11th 2011.

We completed week 10 and I'm still getting organized. As I go along I make a note 'need binder for Lance's history' or 'need three binders for our state studies' etc. Then on our weekly date Lupe and I will stop at Staples or Target to get those items. Other times it's a trip to the storage place. I get sad when we go there because so many books are boxed up. Today for instance we were coloring a page about the Trojan Horse. I have a book about it but where it is, I don't know. It would have been a nice supplement to add while they colored the page.

She is doing great in her studies:
America the Beautiful, Soaring with Spelling, Copywork for Girls, Math-U-See Epsilon, Analytical Grammar and WP LA's, Writing with Ease.
With Writing with Ease, she completed week 18. I had hoped to be further along but some weeks we don't get to it.
With Analytical Grammar she has two more units to go. Hopefully by December she will be done with the first unit. I'll have her take a few months off then she will start Unit 2. WinterPromise Language Arts is going well. She does some creative writing assignments that she enjoys. It has her editing paragraphs (like Editor in Chief), and at times she is suppose to make a boring paragraph more interesting. I really need to blog about WP LA sometime.

 Josh, continues to enjoy Bob Jones for history, science, and Bible.
 Although he does need to take a laundry lesson. This is not how you transfer the clothes from the washer to the dryer.
Josh also completed Sequential Spelling daily. He didn't do writing this week but will start next week again. Latin this week he practiced writing the words (sort of like spelling). I want to make sure that he can read and write Latin.

Lance is thinking. Yesterday, he had to write in his math book addition facts that he knows.

Today (yes, he is wearing the same shirt), he practiced counting by tens.
 Then he would put a 'gem' on a number and I'd has what number comes before and after or two spaces after the number.
 He noticed that the number looked larger when the 'gem' was on it.
Lance, is sounding out cvc (mat) words still. Today, he sounded out 'mad' from Ethan's Explode the Code cover. I'm patiently waiting for All About Reading. My only concern with using All About Reading, are the levels. Because Lance is older than the average bear using this, he may catch on and go through the program quicker. Level two won't be out until 2012, which is around the corner but it may be toward the end of 2012. Level 1 was suppose to be out back in June/July. All I can do is pray that it will be ready in time for Lance.

Ethan, is doing well in school. He completed week 3 of Fast Track Phonics. Next week I might have him review what he has learned so far. I can have him read all the words he has been learning. I haven't spent as much time with him as I would like too.
I still haven't found the Teaching Textbook dvds. He continues to use MCP Math. Today I pulled out the rods and place value mats from Bob Jones manipulatives and went over double digit addition. 77+63. He does very well. He makes the 7 in the ones place a ten, then adds from there. With the rods and place value mat, I showed him how to put the ten in the tens place.
We only did one lesson from Writing with Ease. Didn't even finish the week.
Caleb and Brent are chugging along with their studies. They both were stumped in math this week. Caleb with fractions and Brent with multiplications. I took the time to watch the dvd lesson with each of them and then went over some of the problems before letting them loose.
They are really catching on with Shurley Grammar. Sometimes I think the Question and Answer Flow will be confusing for them, but no, they get it.
The question and answer flow is asking questions to find out what word is,  subject, verb, etc. For instance "Who moved into her new home?" the answer is 'sister' and they would mark that as the Subject Noun. Then they ask the next question, "What is being said about sister?" they would answer 'sister moved' so moved is the verb and so forth.
Today for practice time they had to answer questions like "Name seven object pronouns" they had a hard time with half of the questions so I made flash cards. I thought I could use them for review. Kind of like All About Spelling does with the spelling rules but of course ours will be with the grammar information.

This week for history we completed week 5.
The children completed their notebook pages.
They had to draw a picture of Alexander the Great's horse and draw their own shield. Since we are not making the hideaways and thus do not have a picture to put in our notebook, I am having them draw or paste a picture of what they remember that week. Today,  I searched the internet for a coloring page of the Trojan Horse and that is what we put on the Hideaway notebook page. I should have taken a picture of it.

The children had no Latin this week. I did have the children study the words on their own.

Playing in the Rain

We had a heavy rain yesterday morning. I told the kiddos to go out and play, we can finish school later. There was no lightning, so it was a perfect 'play in the rain' day.

Annette, had a migrane yesterday as well and spent most of the day in bed. Thankfully she is all better now.

Yellow Cake Mix

I'm trying a new yellow cake mix today. From Cooks.com. I felt like making another Pineapple Upside Down Cake. To print it click the link above. I changed a few things, so we'll have to see how it comes out. I also doubled the recipe.
I used cake flour instead of all purpose flour.
I put 1C. sugar instead of 1 1/3 cup.
I used a half cup butter in stead of using 1/4 cup butter and 1/4 cup veg. shortening.
I added 1 egg white.
Lastly I used 1/2 cup milk and 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream.

And of course I added the brown sugar/butter mix and pineapples to make it an upside down pineapple cake.

Next time I make this I'm going to try wheat flour.

2 1/4 cups all purpose flour
1 1/3 cups sugar
3 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup unsalted butter
1/4 cup non-hydrogenated vegetable shortening
1 cup milk
2 eggs
1 teaspoon pure vanilla or lemon extract

Preheat oven to 350°F. Butter and lightly flour 2 round cake pans or 1 bread loaf pan.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together dry ingredients (flour, sugar, baking powder and salt). Add butter and shortening, milk and vanilla or lemon extract.
Beat for 1 minute. Scrape bowl down. Stir in eggs. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes.
Bake 30-35 minutes for round pans or about 45 minutes for loaf pan or until cake tests done when a wooden toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
Remove from oven and let cool for 5 minutes before running a butter knife along edges to release cake from pan.

Week 9

Hopefully, I'll come back this weekend and write a review.

This week wasn't as productive as I would have liked. I think one reason was because I didn't have all our schedules prepared by Monday.
With the cold front we had it threw us for a loop because we love to cuddle with a cup of hot chocolate and watch a good movie.
Then Friday I went to a second-hand store that sells everything for twenty-five cents (bought more cloth napkins and placemats). When I got home I didn't finish the day with schooling. Instead I did lots of laundry, dishes and had the children clean as well.
I enjoyed our Friday. Caleb asked, "Is this a free day!"
Anyway, I would have liked to have done more with the two younger ones this week.

No Pictures Today

Can't believe I didn't take one photo today!

We had a cold front today. Temperatures in the low 40's. Last night Lupe, picked up the heaters that were in storage.

Today we did school but I was tired and didn't want to teach, so we watched a good old western movie instead. Then we went back to school. I wanted to at least get another All About Spelling lesson in with Caleb and Brent and for them to do their Shuley English test.

Ethan, took his chapter two MCP Math test today. I did find out that he needs more place value teaching. I'll work with him on that.

Brent, is so funny. He opened up his candy vending machine business today. I was surprised when he sold out considering there is tons of candy here.

I'm happy to write that we did another Hideaway in History lesson. We completed (or almost) completed week four. The only thing we have left is the notebooking pages.

We are enjoying WinterPromise. I have liked all the programs we've used in the past Animal's in Their World, American Story 1 and Children Around the World. I just wish their shipping was just as good as their program. I have a hard time recommending WP because of it. I was talking to my hubby and he mentioned that the company needs to hire someone who can manage the business. I agree. I love their programs but am wondering how long can they last with so many negative reviews.

Besides their shipping another complaint, some say their programs is disjointed. One thing I have noticed is people say that about many programs that have the schedule premade like SL and MFW (two other programs that I like too). Part of this is and this is just my opinion is many of us are tweakers. There is no perfect curriculum. I hear how some are rearranging the whole schedule to make it fit their learning style.

I'm just happy that someone else picked and scheduled the books. Even if I rearrange a few (which I haven't).

All that to say I am pleased with my WinterPromise purchase (other than the shipping) for the most part.

I almost forgot. I would like more maps in their Hideaway in History program.

Day 42

I had to force myself to get school done today. I had finished listening to Ethan, read his reader on the couch. When he left I laid my head on the sofa arm and closed my eyes. I so wanted to just curl up and take a nap, but I made myself open my eyes and get up. I had to do a Writing with Ease lesson with Annette.

What I did today:
  • All About Spelling with Lance. I dictated about ten letter sounds and five words. Lance, was able to mark three more letters off. Things weren't working out (can't wait for All About Reading to arrive) so I stopped and had him do penmanship using Writing Without Tears.
  • Math for a Living Education from Queen Homeschool. I read the story to Lance, practiced the days of the week and had him copy the numbers 20-29.
  • All About Spelling with Ethan.
  • MCP Math with Ethan, have to add in math with Ethan because I lost our Teaching Textbook program. He started the 2nd chapter and is working with money and place value.
  • Writing with Ease with Annette, she read a passage from The Lemonade Trick, answered questions and summarized. Because we missed yesterday's lessons I also did the dictation exercise. Some of the passages are long and it frustrates her. I encourage her and tell her this is no easy task.
  • Writing with Ease with Caleb and Brent. They are on week 18. Yahoo! Half way through. I read the passage, asked the question, had Caleb summarize it as I wrote it on the board and had both boys copy it.
  • Shurley English with Caleb and Brent. They are doing so well with this program. Like I've said before, it's not the funnest but it's working and the boys don't complain. Even if they did it would still have to get done. Today, we completed chapter 7 lesson 3. The boys were introduced to Object Pronouns. They are now labeling subject nouns, articles, adjectives, prepositions, object of the prepositions, subject pronouns, and verbs. Tomorrow they have a test.
  • Fast Track Phonics with Ethan. I went over the the double 'ee', the silent e rule and the long 'y' sound. I then gave him his worksheets. He did two pages of Explode the Code 3, 1 pgs from his word family book and a mini reader.
  • Hideaway in History with Caleb, Brent, Ethan and Lance. I read about the Persians and Medes. Hopefully tomorrow I can have the children work on the notebooking pages. Still haven't found any maps. I hope to purchase some this weekend and add them in.
  • Briefly went over the first five presidents.
  • Latin with Josh, Annette, Caleb and Brent. Finished a workbook page and practiced all the Latin words introduced so far.
The children did their independent work as well.

I didn't see Lance, in his bed, so I looked around the house and couldn't find him. Then I entered the kitchen and there he was. He had made a bed with the chairs.

 I crossed out the two K's because I wrote them. I also wrote the alphabet at the top. I do this for every lesson. The rest of the writing is Lance's.
 Lance wanted to connect the letters like mom does sometimes. Maybe it's time to look into a cursive workbook for him.

Day 41

It's back to normal. The costumes will be packed away at least for a little while as the children like to use them for plays and such.
There is still a lot of candy floating around. This is after they took out the chewy and hard candies. They also gave about a half of a grocery bag away too!
 They are allowed three pieces a day! Yikes!

I'm happy to report that we did another lesson from our Hideaways in History program. We are on week 4, day 2. Today we read about The Assyrians and Babylonians from the WinterPromise Exclusive reader. To learn more about the Hanging Gardens of Babylon we went to the recommended website. Tomorrow we will read about The Medes and Persians. Josh commented on our history program saying we have a fun one.
I am going to make an extra effort to start using the online resources that WP provides. The WP Exclusive reader is good but seeing some of what we read really helps. This is why I like the picture books that are suggested but not included "You Wouldn't Want to be....." series.
The current picture book read that is included in the package is Cleopatra's Coin.
Now if I can get science going.

This year the children are also memorizing the presidents in order.  I'm not adding a whole lot to this. No notebooking, coloring pages etc. We are just learning the names and I'll read a little about the president from the back of the card.
I did dig out some of my My Father's World State Sheets as well. Next week the four younger ones will start coloring and memorizing them too.

For Bible, I'm adding a few crafty stuff. Tomorrow we will make a Bible Wheel. I would like to purchase Pop Up Parables and Other Bible Stories, Cut and Tell Bible Stories and Bible Stories to Draw and Tell. I thought this would be a fun way to teach the Bible to the four younger children. I'm sure Caleb and Brent are a bit old but that's okay. Next year I hope to start How to Study Your Bible by Kay Arthur.
