TOS Crew Review:Mathematical Reasoning Level F

One of my favorite homeschooling resources is The Critical Thinking Co., so I jumped at the chance to review Mathematical Reasoning Level F. This can be used as a stand alone math program for grade 5 or as a supplement. The cost is $42.99.
There are 413 pages. According to my calculations, Caleb can complete this math book within the 180 homeschool days if he does between two and three pages a day, five days a week. I'm always calculating, so I thought this bit of information might be helpful.

This book focuses on:
  • Number of operation
  • Algebra
  • Geometry
  • Measurement
  • Data Analysis and Probability
It's a spiral math program, meaning that a concept is introduced for a few pages, then a break before it is covered again.

My children don't have to have color in their school books, but I do appreciate that Mathematical Reasoning does not lack in this area and the pages are appealing.
The attractiveness of the book kept Caleb engaged with the program. The exercises were different from his everyday math. It kind of gave math a new twist in the middle of the school year.
In the exercise below, the child is to label the different angles of the key.
I liked that this program had a balance with drilling everyday math concepts as well as problem solving and reasoning skills.
All instructions are on the student page, so there is no separate teacher manual. The Answer Key is in the back. One thing that I would like added to the Answer Key is it to show some problems worked out but that would not deter me from purchasing (as one of our current math programs doesn't have problems worked out as well and we still use it)

Because the instructions are written on each page, assignments can be done fairly independent with mom close by if needed. With Caleb, he pretty much knew what to do, although there were a few times when I had to explain something. Usually with the Balance Math, Math Analogies and such because these were new to him.

What did Caleb think of Mathematical Reasoning Level F?
He liked it.
At first he said it was easy but as he progressed through the book it became more challenging.

This is a keeper. Caleb will continue to use it it along with his regular math program.
