Schoolhouse Review: Beloved Books~Sugar Creek Gang Audio Vol. 1

My children love, love, love, audio books. They listen to them every, single, day. They wake up and put an audio book on. During lunch, quiet time, and at bedtime too. I truly believe that listening to so many good books (and of course me reading aloud) has broadened their vocabulary. Many times I'm amazed at the words they use because when I was their age I didn't have such a rich vocabulary as they do.

Another benefit with having good audio books as well as reading to them is how they really get the children thinking. I can't tell you how many times my children want to do good and make wise choices. Often times it's because they have been introduced to a character in a book that they read or listened to.

One time I read a book about a missionary. I can't recall which one, it was a few years back when I read it. My 4th child Brent looked up to that missionary and wanted to serve others better in our home. He would go out of his way to do something for me.

Another time I read a Christmas story about some children who wanted to give their parents a surprise, so they cleaned the house in the middle of the night. Guess what happened a few days later at our house, yes, I woke from a nap to a clean house.

Along with the Bible, audio books and reading to my children play a big part with aiding to teach them to be kind, generous, have humility, to be loyal, to have compassion, honor, and patience. The list of virtues can go on-and-on.

As you can see, I can't imagine life without books and audio CDs. They are very much a part of our lives. We have laughed and cried (okay mama is the one doing all the crying) with many characters and have been to many places. Places we would never have been to if it weren't for our books!

What is the Sugar Creek Gang? The books were written by Paul Hutchen a man who loved the Lord. He was a graduate of Moody Bible Institute. He began to write The Sugar Creek Gang in 1939 and I believe the first book was published in 1940. From what I understand the series is named after Sugar Creek which is near Thorntown, Indiana.

The gang of boys are amusing and entertaining as the listeners become part of their world and adventures. Bill, is the narrator and the only character without a nickname. The rest of the gang have nicknames that give a glimpse of who they are.

Little Jim is the most 'Christian' as Bill describes him. Little Jim obeys his parents and because he is so good, he is sort of the gangs mascot. Little Jim is also very likable.

Poetry, loves words, especially words from poetry. He often quotes whole poems. He is also best friends with Bill.

Circus Brown, is very acrobatic.

Big Jim, keeps the gang in line, especially when it comes to making good and wise choices.

Dragonfly, he can see real well. As Bill described, his eyes are almost as big as his head. Dragonfly doesn't mind his nickname at all, in fact he likes it.

The author Paul Hutchen so naturally adds nature tidbits into the stories. For instance in the first story, The Swamp Robbers, you will learn a little bit about the Screech Owl, the Black Widow Spider, and Mosquitoes just to name a few.

Each story is about 2 hours long (give or take 15 minutes) and can stand alone, although it's suggested that you listen in order. The reason being is the series follows a continuing story line but most importantly is the spiritual foundation that is built upon as the series progresses.

Beloved books has been so generous to allow the first book  Swamp Robber free as an mp3 download

I enjoyed listening to the Sugar Creek Gang along with the children. It was great to hear verses quoted throughout and the children speaking positive about their parents. It's rare these days for one to hear or read about children saying kind things of their parents.

You can find many more wonderful audio books at Beloved Books. Good wholesome books. Books that will inspire your children to be more like Jesus. I would highly encourage you to turn off the television and listen to an audio book instead (particularly The Sugar Creek Gang!).
