Schoolhouse Review: Teaching Kids to Sing

Chris and Carole Beatty are the founders of Vocal Coach. They produce vocal training CDs and DVDs for children and adults. Chris is an accomplished singer and songwriter, two of which are my favorite songs, Holy Ground and You are Worthy.

As a Schoolhouse Review Crew member I was privileged to have been chosen as one of the reviewers for Teaching Kids To Sing. This is a 2DVD/1CD set, the cost $44.99. This is targeted for elementary grades or ages 5-11. This set contains:

*DVD~Building Foundations That Last
*DVD~Essential Skills for Growing Voices
*CD~Accompaniment Tracks

The two DVDs of Teaching Kids To Sing covers:
Vocal Health
And more

The CD contains all the warm-up exercises and songs from the DVDs.
Chris and Carole Beatty along with a group of children demonstrate the warm-ups and techniques. The DVD contain up beat and catchy songs that help the children retain what they have learned, for instance, good singing posture, that they are a vocal athlete, breathing and warm-ups.

I was thrilled to hear "I'm an upright child of the King" and "It's all by God's design" in their songs. In fact at the end of the 2nd DVD Chris close with the verse Proverbs 22:6 and has the children repeat it as well.

These DVDs are very professionally made. Chris does most of the teaching and throughout the episodes you see Carole making sure the children are standing and sitting correctly for optimum singing voices.

The CD that contains all the songs and warm-ups from the DVD is a real plus. First Chris will sing the song, then at times he will sing a line and have the children sing, then it's time to sing alone and the music plays without Chris. It's the same with the warm-ups.

With using Teaching Kids to Sing at first my children were a bit embarrassed to do this with me. Especially my very conservative son Ethan. He naturally speaks low. Many times his dad and I have to ask him what did you say, because we can't hear him.

With me doing all the warm-ups with them they finally came around and it was a lot of fun. I love being able to pop in the cd and sing along with Chris (I sound better when singing along).

One reason I was really thrilled to review this item is, I can't carry a tune very well. I wanted something to help me in this area, and although I won't ever be a great singer (unless the good Lord decides he wants to make that change in me) I did walk a way with a better understanding of how to improve. With learning more about posture, breathing, tone, dynamics and vocal health.

What did the kids think? Like I mentioned, they were a bit embarrassed at first but they finally warmed up to Teaching Kids to Sing. Now one can hear ME-AH-ME-AH-ME at Homeschooling6.

I hope to continue to use this with the children through the year. I want them to continue practice breathing and doing the warm-ups.
