Schoolhouse Review: Legacy Documentaries

When I was in grade school I read all the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. I enjoyed them so much I read them multiple times. Now I share these wonderful books with my own children. I also collected all the audio books and they have been listened to literally over a 100 times.
Through the years though I often wanted to find out more about Almanzo’s childhood. Wouldn’t you know it, I was blessed to be one of the reviewers for Almanzo Wilder: Life Before Laura by Legacy Documentaries.

Dean Butler the gentleman who played Almanzo in the television series Little House on the Prairie is the executive producer of this documentary.

The documentary takes you back to Almanzo’s boyhood and gives a bit more insight to his life in New York. I liked that it focused on the hard work, discipline, and respect for his parents. These are areas that my husband and I work at to instill into our own children.

Not like processed foods of today. And for horse lovers, you’ll absolutely enjoy learning about the Morgan horses, such beautiful animals.

For my youngest son Lance this really hit home for him because he’s the same age as Almanzo is in this film, almost 9. He got to see how although young Almanzo contributed a lot to the family via chores and how much Almanzo wanted to help train the colts. I think Lance realized how much more mature Almanzo was at his age. Actually it was great for all the children to see this.

Since watching the documentary I have often referred to how Almanzo would handle a situation to Lance. This has really helped Lance to grow-up some. With being the youngest my silly-little guy has taken his role very seriously.

The recommended age is 8-13. My children ages 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 15, all enjoyed watching it.
To take a sneak peek you can watch the 2:44 trailer of Almanzo Wilder: Life Before Laura as well as a documentary on Laura, The Legacy of Laura Ingalls Wilder and if interested in Pa’s fiddle playing you can purchase and see the trailer of Pa’s Fiddle DVD too! I plan to purchase Pa’s Fiddle DVD for dad’s birthday. He’s a Little House fan as well.

My final thoughts: If you are a Laura Ingalls fan I would high suggest adding Almanzo Wilder: Life Before Laura to your Little House collection. It is very well done and family friendly. I’d also suggest adding The Legacy of Laura and Pa’s Fiddle as well (I am). It was an educational and fun DVD to watch. I loved how Legacy Documentaries incorporated illustrations from the book Farmer Boy and narrated bits of it too.

Price: $21.95 for Almanzo Wilder: Life Before Laura
